Lost? and IPCop

Well, if you’re a regular follower of this blog you already know that I have a tendency to disappear for weeks…something I try not to do too often but sadly it happens.

So what have I been up to? Well just trying to pass my Japanese class and working. I’ve got a couple of projects in my hands but the one I’m working on right now is getting IPCop up and running so that it replaces my current firewall setup.

Last photos from Cincinnati

Ok, so these are the last batch and you can see all 100+ photos that were taken during this trip in the Photography section of this site and these are some of my favorite photos from the trip…enjoy :)

I’ll start with the last photo taken before landing in Costa Rica…oh before I go on let me just say that despite every airline out there saying that the airport is in San Jose, CR’s capital, I’m sorry to break this to you but that’s not true in fact you are like 30mins from San Jose, the airport is actually in Alajuela…ok back to our regular programming ^_^

This photo was taken while our plane was going around a thunderstorm, now this isn’t the greatest photo in the world but I actually am happy that it even came out like it did since I wasn’t really expecting anything to come out.

The storm outside

This was a long exposure and there was turbulance so that’s why you see the wing like that. The blue on the back…yup you guessed it…it’s lightning and at certain points you could actually see the lightning volt. So lets recap on my trip to Taiwan the pilot had to push the engines to abort the landing since he was comming in too fast and had to circle the airport again, on my trip to New York the landing was rough because of the high speed winds that night and everyone in the plane applauded once we had landed and finally we have the flying near a thunderstorm…so those are the experiences on flights that I find quite interesting. My dad told me that on one of his flights the airplane engines powered down in mid flight, luckily the pilot managed to power them back on.

To Taryn…

Taryn,

Since you requested in the previous post for the photo of the parking lot to be run through the F/Zero action…here I show you the outcome of that

Miniature parking lot

Enjoy :)

More photos from Cincinnati

Well that’s taking quite a long time to accomplish and I appear to be getting better with my photograph taking skills since I have less missed shots ;)

One of the reasons for my delay on processing the photos is because I’ve been busy setting up my file server, if you’ve been following this blog you might have noticed my posts on OpenFiler, but I’ve taken some time to continue processing the photos.

This isn’t the plane we took…well because if it was then I would have missed it…but the shot is one of my favorites

I don’t have a tilt/shift lens so I used the f/zero from Boutwell’s Totally Rad Actions to accomplish this effect

Boarding the plane

Look at the little people…hehe

OpenFiler has been implemented and tested

Even after the small issue I ran into with one hard drive I kept installing and configuring this appliance so that it can be used on the production environment that is my home network and I’m quite pleased at what I have been able to accomplish so far.

I copied the files off the hard drives and onto the OpenFiler formated hard drives so that the data could be shared around the network. The one thing I ran into was a permissions issue where I was able to create, move and delete only files that I created on the shares from the desktop machines but any of the files that I had moved previously to the directory. After a quick research I discovered that all this was due to the files, which were moved using the console of OpeFiler, were owned by Nobody. I changed the permissions on the files and everything is good in the world…well at least the network.

I had my dad run tests from his workstation and everything that he needs to do is working so it’s good enough. I have backed up the configuration just in case.

I still have my previous install up and running so I configured it to connect to the LDAP that’s on the production machine and it works like expected so I’ll keep that other box around for testing. I still need to continue looking around for the configuration and what else can be done with this system but as far as right now it’s working as it should and no further issues have been seen.

And now to add more capacity to this file server…

Switching over to OpenFiler

After my testing on OpenFiler went pretty much successful and I really liked the features it had despite my first experience with the appliance and also the missing features that I mentioned I’ve decided to move this into the “production” environment that is my home network.

At home we’ve become so acustomed to having a file server that my dad backs up his laptop to it and gets stressed whenever I take down the server to do something on it…such as last night when he asked me if he could do his regular backup to the file server and I told him that the server was no longer up because I was rebuilding it.

Unfortunately the migration didn’t go as smoothly as expected.
