I read this post over at slashdot and it says “not everyone is ‘ok’ with Google automatically recognizing you in pictures.” and all I can say is why doesn’t this amaze me.
I’m not amazed at the fact that face recognition is out on Picasa and right now I can say that I’ll definitely give this a try this weekend but I’m amazed at the fact that people still believe in privacy when posting something on the Internet. I was recently asked if I was worried that someone would steal my photos that I’ve posted on Flickr to use on something else and honestly if I didn’t want people to steal the photos I wouldn’t be posting them on the Internet in the first place, this being Flickr or any other site.
Now going back to topic…the whole face recognition feature that Google applied to Picasa I find it pretty cool and quite useful though it might actually be a lot more useful in sites like Facebook. Everything comes down as to how it’s used and there will definitely be a bad use for it by some people.
If you find that this will be offensive or violate your “privacy” then just let your friends and family know so that they don’t tag you in the photos they post publicly on the Internet…better yet tell them not to post them publicly because honestly if someone was after your child or you they certainly have a ton of other tools that can be used rather than just rely on Picasa to get information on you or any of your loved ones.
So if you don’t want other people finding out information about you…well don’t place it on the Internet because even if you aren’t tagged in a photo they can still use it to get close to you if they really wanted.
