Computer vendors offering Linux on their machines
A couple of major desktop computer and laptop vendors have begun to create a strategy or to sell their machines running the beautiful GNU/Linux OS, I for one agree with this idea, mainly because this will mean that I can purchase a laptop that runs Linux without any issues of devices not being recognized, like it’s the case for my current laptop.
One company has decided, well after a poll on one of their sites, that Ubuntu was the choice of GNU/Linux distribution that they should use on their machines. Ubuntu is a great distribution if you ask me, I actually use it on one of my servers, though it will soon be replaced with another distro. But this distribution is for the new person that is interested in using an OS that is not Windows, but I believe that the most hard core Linux users out there will prefer to install their favorite distro, yet there will be those that still choose Ubuntu. Personally I would install Debian or ArchLinux on that machine if I were to get one.
Another big company has released their selected machines running RedHat Enterprise Linux as their distro of choice. One of my first distros was RedHat 9 and I must admit that I really liked it a lot and recently I’ve been using RHEL a bit more than usual and I have actually enjoyed this distro. If I were to obtain a machine that came with RHEL pre-installed I would most likely keep it running that distro and not install another distro, unless I had to keep paying RedHat or that computer vendor in order to keep my system up to date.
Now another computer vendor is in the works of having their machines, which I would like to get my hands on, come with Linux pre-installed. This company has released a poll on one of their sites, among the distributions listed as options we have Ubuntu, Debian and ArchLinux. I obviously voted for ArchLinux and the results show that this distro only has obtained two votes, I guess it might not be the distro they end up using, but I have high hopes. Again, if they decide that their wonderful machines should run Ubuntu and I were to get one, the first thing I would do is install ArchLinux or Debian over that.
I’ve found that ArchLinux and Debian are my two favorite distributions and I use them on my machines. I guess that the general public prefers for the machines from these vendors to have a “user-friendly” distro because they are afraid of the console or just find it too hard to work on it. I actually love working on the console and wouldn’t mind having a distro like that. I actually approve this movement by the major computer hardware vendors to support Linux and also support the idea. I would like to get my hands on one of these laptops that come from either of these major vendors that come with Linux pre-installed.
What is your take on this matter?
