I started with a basic TDMA phone, yes it was old and a huge brick, but unfortunately it’s what works best in Costa Rica and then bought another Motorola phone, again it was a TDMA, and finally moved to GSM. So far I haven’t found a phone that I can definitely say that it’s The Phone but there have been some phones which I like a lot.
First let me go through the list of phones I’ve had in the past, don’t worry it’s not that long, I’ll start with the GSM phones since the TDMA phones were so basic it’s not even worth mentioning. When I first got interested in the GSM cellphone world I wanted something cool that wasn’t a phone that everyone had, so I purchased the SonyEricsson W300i. This is a good phone for someone that doesn’t really want a phone with a lot of features but wants a phone that is able to play music at the end I sold it.
The replacement of this phone was, again, a SonyEricsson Z610i which has been a great phone for the coolness factor mostly and specially since no one else had it at the time so it also had the unique factor. I gave it to my younger sister since she wanted it and it has been available in my country since the past month thus loosing the unique factor.
Now I’m looking for a phone that will be geeky enough for me and for it to have a coolness factor. This has been a daunting task that has not been easy, mostly because the features that I would like to have on a phone are spread among multiple phones. Since I’m in the middle of getting a new phone, I currently have a Nokia phone which is pretty much your basic phone with a bad camera. One of the features that I like a lot about this phone is that it not only automatically locks the keypad after a certain amount of time has gone by but it also password protects it so that no one else can use it, unfortunately I’ve only seen this feature on this Nokia phone and on an old Motorala that I had, SonyEricsson doesn’t seem to have this feature.
The touch screen is a really cool feature since it allows for more control of the device, IMO, yet you have to find one that is not easily damaged or easy to mess up with. Touch screens have been on smartphones for years and until recently general phones have actually incorporated them though it’s only on selected phones.
The operating system is another geek feature that I would like to have on a phone, the usual software that the phones bring is not that cool and having an OS like Symbian or Linux is actually very interesting. The OpenMoko project sounds really interesting specially since the phone actually runs Linux and has a console and everything, this actually adds more points, a lot of phones actually run on Linux yet they lock the user to a graphical interface that doesn’t have a console. The phone appears to be the ultimate geek phone but all of the points that it was able to get through he OS and having a console are lost on the design, the design of the OpenMoko project phone is not very nice at all and this is basically what I don’t like of the phone. Although I’m still considering getting one of these phones when they come out.
The other phone I’m considering is the SonyEricsson W960i, yes I’m a fan of SE, since it has some very neat features. The 8GB memory, touch screen and Wi-Fi capabilities make it an excellent phone to have, yet it runs Symbian OS and no console. I have nothing against the OS, specially since I’ve never used it before, so I might give that phone a try.
