In need of hardware

Well, my trip to Taiwan has to be rescheduled to one month later, this because of another business trip to Colorado. I suddenly need more hardware, specially one machine that can run Windows 2003 server and I also need to create some sort of backup script to backup the data in my two laptops to the server.

So, let’s begin with the trip.My company is sending me to Colorado for some training, well if that can be called training. Right now the details are not very clear, but it is at least two weeks and up to 4 weeks, so, because they decided to divide my department into two groups and not take everyone in one single trip, because who would then answer the phones, I have to reschedule my trip to Taiwan.

Originally I was planning my trip to Taiwan in August, but that’s when the second group goes to Colorado, so I was asked to reschedule the other trip, which I’m already doing. So my family will be leaving on August and I’ll leave on September, meeting them there and then returning with them, so I’ll be staying for like a little more than a week. I find that traveling to other countries is fun, so I might plan another trip for next year, or maybe the next, mostly because I’m terrible at saving money.

Other than the rescheduling of the trip. I’m really excited about this trip to Colorado, most people might consider business trips as boring or something that one shouldn’t be too excited about, mostly because it’s a business trip and you are working. But, besides the fact that I like to travel, I’ve never been to Colorado. A coworker heard that I was rescheduling my trip to Taiwan and he told me that if he had to choose between rescheduling the trip to Taiwan and going to Colorado he would go to Taiwan.

The bad thing is that I will have to stick to my work buddies, not because I’ve never been to Colorado, but because I don’t have a drivers license therefore not being able to rent a car and just go visiting places, which would totally rock, but what the hell. Hopefully my coworkers or the people that work in the Colorado offices will drive me around to go shopping or to visit some places. Now you might argue that going all the way to the US and instead of going site seeing, which I plan to do, going to Best Buy or a Mall to buy things might be completely stupid, well as it turns out stuff is cheaper in the USA than in CR, and let me tell you that going to the USA and not buying anything might be considered somewhat crazy in this country. So, I’ll go shopping for some goodies that I can bring home, like the Twislers (sp?) and other tech goodies. Obviously buying stuff that can’t be bought here in this country.

Well, besides the traveling being done this year, I’m in need of more hardware for my network. I need a box that can run Windows 2003 server so that I can set up a VPN server, but why not use OpenVPN or something like that, well because it’s just easier to set up a VPN in Windows than to set up OpenVPN, let’s face it, it’s true. Besides setting up my sister’s laptop, which runs on Windows XP Home, to use OpenVPN is just tough, especially since she is far away. I did set up OpenVPN, which was nice, but will have to work on some details to get it up and running the way I want it, for one, I would like to put my WLAN through a VPN and have it more secure, but that requires a bit of work, specially since my printer is on the WLAN and I can’t setup OpenVPN on it, so that would require a bit of hacking, on the network side, to get it to work as smoothly as possible.

Hopefully I will get some Sun Netras from a friend, when he gets around to testing them, and they would be put to work on some tasks over here. Well, I still haven’t configured the Snort box in my network, mostly because of laziness but it will be there. Hopefully during the flight I will be able to finish reading the documents that I want to read regarding this subject and when I come back I’ll be able to configure that easily. While in Colorado I might be able to go to a book store and get some books on Linux subjects. Some of my coworkers think that this is stupid, but they’re not as geeky as I am ;)
